But she is not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts say the streets are filled with such sad stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So is the group Kalia helped form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These local parents have experienced nightmares of their own \u2014 a son kept gas containers near the furnace to ward off hallucinations, another set fire to himself, a son with delusions bought a one-way ticket to Thailand, a daughter covered light fixtures \u2014 nearly starting a fire \u2014 because she thought she was being watched through the bulbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet, despite these harrowing experiences, the families still can\u2019t get their children treated because their illnesses have left them without the insight to know they need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s part of the problem facing those trying to help their loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anosognosia (inability to recognize you\u2019re ill) impacts those with serious mental illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bryenton was willing to share her name and her son\u2019s in a desperate attempt to save him, but we chose not publish his images or name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s what prevents many parents from speaking out about the mental health care system: their adult children have a right to privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also have freedom to choose \u2014 or not choose \u2014 treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Ontario\u2019s Mental Health Act, patients cannot be involuntarily treated unless they\u2019re deemed a threat to themselves or others. Even when a psychiatrist attests to that danger, the ruling can be appealed, delayed and overturned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karen Scott Booth is another parent who knows the struggle well. Her son has bipolar disorder. He went missing from 2017 to 2020, in and out of seven different hospitals \u2014 each time refusing treatment \u2014 until finally, he was arrested for swinging a bike chain and threatening, and sent to jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, a psychiatrist and proper medication brought him to recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe probably wouldn\u2019t be here today if he hadn\u2019t been arrested,\u201d she says. \u201cI swore that if we survived, I would spend the rest of my life changing the system so people who are ill get medical treatment in a timely manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To try and fix these problems, Scott Booth is part of a team of advocates, including psychiatrists, university professors, lawyers, social workers, police officers and forensic psychologists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TEAM to Effect Change also includes six family members with their own tragedies, like the father whose daughter, with the help of a lawyer, was released from hospital when she was unwell and shortly thereafter jumped to her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Mothers to Reform concentrates on sharing podcasts and information to help others navigate the health system, TEAM is calling on MPP Michael Tibollo, the province\u2019s associate minister of mental health and addictions, to bring forward an amendment to the Health Care Consent Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Ontario law, if a psychiatrist decides a patient should receive involuntary treatment, the patient may appeal, leading to lengthy delays and, often, deterioration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facing a shortage of beds, psychiatrists often discharge involuntary patients rather than fight that protracted battle, Scott Booth says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The TEAM amendment would permit treatment while awaiting the final decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bryenton, too, is working for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is working with MP Sean Casey and former senator Diane Griffin on a private member\u2019s bill, the first of its kind, similar to Advanced Medical Directives for people who are dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients who are recovered from psychiatric illness would sign the directive, agreeing that, should they get sick again, police may take them to hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think in my son\u2019s case, if he knew everything we had to go through to get him help \u2026 he would sign. He wouldn\u2019t want to see us go through that heartache again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After multiple appeals to the province for help, Bryenton received an email from Premier Doug Ford saying he is sorry to hear about her \u201cdifficult experiences and challenges. With that said, I do appreciate your insight on this matter and take your concerns seriously,\u201d the email said. \u201cI&#8217;ve forwarded your email to the Honourable Sylvia Jones, minister of health, for her information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither Jones, nor Tibollo, responded to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/yorkregion.com\/\">YorkRegion.com<\/a>&#8216;s requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some experts believe it\u2019s not just flaws in the laws to blame, but lack of resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael Braithwaite, CEO of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bluedoor.ca\/\">Blue Door<\/a>, a York Region charity, has experienced&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkregion.com\/news\/yorks-360kids-director-knows-homelessness-from-painful-family-experience\/article_fff8b8f4-3643-5f1d-8164-7d1ddcd98512.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar struggles with his sister<\/a>\u2019s mental illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne day, the person is open to getting help and you\u2019re hopeful; the next, they have no idea what you\u2019re talking about and are off the rails again. The toll it takes on families, the judgment and guilt \u2026 you just feel helpless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working in shelters, he has seen what happens when people go off their medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are outbursts and, when you dig deeper, it\u2019s because they\u2019ve run out of medication or stopped taking it \u2026 It all starts and ends with a safe place to call home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ontario needs more support for families and supports in affordable housing for those with serious mental illness, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Richard O\u2019Reilly, consultant psychiatrist and Western University professor, says the situation is worsening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you have a psychotic disorder and lack insight to appreciate you need treatment, you\u2019re quite likely to end up on the streets, abandoned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated 30 to 40 per cent in the homeless population has a mental illness, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthcommission.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/drupal\/PrimaryCare_Turning_the_Key_Summary_ENG_0_1.pdf\">Mental Health Commission of Canada<\/a>&nbsp;reports, and new research suggests it could be higher than 50 per cent. And yet, O&#8217;Reilly says, Ontario has progressively closed psychiatric beds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Twenty years ago, we never had patients lined up in the ER. Now, many hospitals almost continuously have five to 20 patients who have been accepted for a psychiatric in-patient bed but remain in the ER due to unavailability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a person with severe mental illness needing treatment presents to an emergency department, staff often feel pressured to avoid admission because of an acute shortage of psychiatric beds, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe end up discharging them to homeless shelters or directly onto the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While much of the focus on homelessness is quite rightly on addictions and safe injection sites, he says, many living on the streets require antipsychotic treatment, very high support group homes with round-the-clock nursing staff and restrictions on their freedom, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curfews to keep them from wandering off and into danger may raise the ire of civil libertarians, he says, but it\u2019s a choice: ensuring their freedom, or keeping them safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy colleague in the U.S. coined the phrase \u2018rotting with their rights on\u2019 &#8230; It&#8217;s almost identical to issues around long-term-care homes. We need a similar type of residential institution for some of the most severely impaired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pendulum has swung too far for rights and privacy of the patient \u2014 to the patient\u2019s detriment, says Marvin Ross, a Dundas writer\/publisher and advocate for those with serious mental illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, he has a right to decide if he wants treatment or hospitalization, but that only works if you\u2019re of right mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t do that if granny has Alzheimer\u2019s and she wanders off and no one can find her. Everybody\u2019s out there looking for her before she dies of exposure. But with the mentally ill, they don\u2019t really care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkregion.com\/users\/profile\/Kim-Zarzour\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted on: August 31st, 2023.
